This resource supports secondary school teachers to use the new interactive Holocaust education website Ordinary Objects Extraordinary Journeys in the classroom.

Mussa Uwitonze became an orphan after being separated from his family during the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. He was raised in an orphanage, and it was there that he was first handed a camera – a moment that fuelled his lifelong passion for photography.

This set of six worksheets introduces secondary school teachers and students to six different genocides through a key date, the experiences of one person, and the story of one artefact. It can also be used in a non-school environment.

This lesson is suitable for 11–14-year-old students. Through testimony, artefacts and memorials it introduces the history of the Kindertransport – a programme that rescued 10,000 children from the Nazis. It is suitable for use in a range of subjects – such as History, Art and Design, English, RE, PSHE, Citizenship.

This is a flexible lesson plan aimed at 9–11-year-old learners. Your students will learn about Renie Inow, who came to Britain on the Kindertransport at the age of 10. You will read letters her parents sent her, and learn what the Kindertransport programme was, and why it was needed.

The Sonderkommando, or ‘Special Squads’, were work units in the Nazi death camps. They consisted of male, mainly Jewish, prisoners who were forced to work in and around the crematoria of several of the Nazi death camps. Members of the Sonderkommando would be regularly replaced, with the new members being responsible for taking the bodies of their predecessors to the crematoria once they too had been murdered in the gas chambers.

Hatidža’s husband and sons were murdered alongside more than 8,000 men and boys at the genocidal massacre in Srebrenica. In 2002, Hatidža founded the Mothers of Srebrenica to ensure their killers were brought to justice.

Philipp Manes was a German Jewish businessman and World War One veteran. In 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt Ghetto, where he kept a meticulous record of daily life. He was murdered at Auschwitz in 1944.

The diary written by Anne Frank is famous around the world as an eye witness account which gives an insight into the persecution faced by Jewish people under the Nazi regime.

Kemal Pervanić and his family were Muslims living in Kevljani, Bosnia. In 1992 Bosnian Serb forces imprisoned Kemal and his brother in the notorious Omarska concentration camp. As part of our 2011 Hidden Histories project Kemal showed us a photograph of his family which survived the Bosnian war.
