HMDT’s response to the Radovan Karadžić trial verdict

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has found former Bosnian-Serb President Radovan Karadžić guilty of crimes including responsibility for the deliberate removal of populations, the siege of Sarajevo, hostage-taking of UN peacekeepers, and the Genocide in Srebrenica.

Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, which commemorates the Srebrenica Genocide each year on Holocaust Memorial Day, said:

‘Holocaust Memorial Day Trust welcomes this verdict, the most significant passed by the ICTY. This trial has proven that during the Bosnian War the Bosnian-Serb political leadership commissioned the crime of genocide, the intentional destruction of a national, ethnical, racial or religious group of people. Many survivors of the Genocide in Srebrenica, the families of those who were murdered at Srebrenica, and the survivors and families of victims of other appalling atrocities committed during the Bosnian War will welcome this verdict, as should everyone concerned with justice after genocide. The verdict shows where responsibility for these crimes lies, and helps close a dark chapter in the history of Europe.’
