[Extra]Ordinary Portraits criteria and guidelines

The competition is now closed but you can still take part. Please read through the criteria for guidance on creating a portrait for this project.

Guidelines for entrants

Before entering, make sure you read through our guidelines and the criteria the judges will be using to select the best photos. You will find all the information you need to make sure your photo meets our requirements below:

  • You must be aged 25 or under to take part in the competition
  • You can take part as an individual or as a group
  • Portrait subjects must be somebody affected by the themes covered by Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s (HMDT) work. These include the Holocaust, Nazi persecution, genocide, migration, conflict and identity-based persecution.
  • You (individuals and groups) may submit only one portrait
  • The portrait must have been taken after the opening date of the competition (June 2022) please do not use artwork created before this date
  • We will accept all visual art forms so long as they can be submitted digitally or photographed, easily transported and displayed as part of an online and/or in-person exhibition
  • If you are submitting photographs of your portrait you can submit up to three images. Make sure photos are taken using a clear background in a well-lit space and the photos are high-quality with no filters used
  • Up to thirty portraits will be selected by the judging panel to form part of an exhibition which will be displayed in a central London location and online in January 2023
  • Winners will be announced on, or close to, 27 January 2023

Judging criteria

Entrants should consider the following criteria before submitting:

  1. That the portrait subject is clearly relevant to the Ordinary People theme and the work of HMDT (i.e., the subject of the portrait is linked to the Holocaust or another genocide, themes of war and conflict, migration or identity-based persecution)
  2. The portrait reveals the subject’s ‘extraordinary’ experiences
  3. The portrait is creative and well composed
  4. The portrait is moving or thought provoking
  5. The portrait meets required T&Cs and guidelines (detailed below)

Terms and Conditions

Please see below for an outline of the terms and conditions of the [Extra]Ordinary Portraits competition. Any entries which do not comply with the terms set out below will be disqualified.

  1. All entrants must be aged 25 or under
  2. Portraits should be submitted via our online form (hosted by Award Force) by 11.59pm on 5 December 2022
  3. All submissions must be from individuals, groups or organisations based in the United Kingdom. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) will only select images from within the UK for the exhibition.
  4. Portraits must have been created by the group or individual responsible for the submission
  5. The copyright of all entries remains with the artists, and the artist will be credited for the use of their work, wherever it is reasonably practical to do so
  6. Any artworks or photographs of artworks may be used and shared, in perpetuity, by HMDT for future materials or media work. This includes digital use and in print. Photographs may be cropped or edited for these purposes.
  7. Images will remain the property of the group or individual submitting, however HMDT will own copyright of the [Extra]Ordinary Portraits exhibition in perpetuity
  8. By submitting photographs with people in them, participants are confirming that permissions have been given by any individuals in the photo for it to be shared by HMDT. If the individuals in the photo are under 18, permissions will have been obtained by the photographer from their parents or carers prior to the submission of photographs. It is the photographer’s responsibility to ensure that the people in their photographs are aware of the T&Cs for the purpose and use of the photographs (e.g. that the photos may be shared on social media and in print).
  9. All data that you have shared with us during this project will be stored in line with HMDT’s Privacy Policy
  10. HMDT will select up to thirty portraits based on the selection criteria and information described on the competition web page and the downloadable guidance resource. Selected images will win a small prize and will be displayed as part of the online national ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2023.
  11. Up to 30 winners will have their portraits exhibited in the online exhibition, and a selection of these will also be displayed as part of the national HMD 2023 online ceremony and will be available to display at local HMD events
  12. These portraits will be displayed as the [Extra]Ordinary Portraits online exhibition and all artists will have their name displayed with their artwork, alongside the title and any accompanying text
  13. We are unable to provide comments or feedback on selected portraits, nor enter into detailed correspondence with participants. The judging panel’s decision on images that are selected will be final.
  14. HMDT will notify winners by 27 January 2023
  15. The exhibition may be displayed at various locations across the UK after the Commemorative Ceremony for HMD 2023. Information related to any further exhibitions will be communicated by HMDT to winners at a later stage.
  16. Submission of an artwork will be deemed to constitute acceptance of these terms and conditions
