Join us on January 30, 2024, on Teams, Holocaust Memorial Event and pay tribute to the incredible story of the Granaat family. This event aims to remember the bravery, endurance, loss, and love experienced by Tootje (Cato) Granaat and her immediate family during the Holocaust.

Tootje Granaat, born in Amsterdam in 1926, had a joyful Jewish upbringing until the outbreak of the War in May 1940. Tootje's daughter, Melanie, will captivate us with her account of the family's attempt to flee to England and their subsequent ordeals throughout the war. As the Nazis intensified their persecution of Dutch Jews, some members of the Granaat family went into hiding, while others joined the Resistance. Shockingly, some were transported to Westerbork transit camp and faced deportation to Auschwitz.

The presentation will shed light on the remarkable decision of Tootje's mother, Lily, who bravely declared her non-Jewish status in a last-ditch effort to save her family from deportation. Sadly, Tootje's sisters, Kitty and Liesje, fell victim to the Nazis' Nuremberg laws, which compromised their lives during their prime years.
