It started with a photo... a photo that existing scholarship said was impossible: a group of newly liberated Holocaust survivors, all holding their young babies born in the concentration camps. How could such a photo ever have been taken, when existing scholarly consensus was that upon discovery, pregnant women were immediately murdered?
Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, join historian Danielle Cavender-Handley for a talk examining the remarkable stories of five women which flies in the face of accepted Holocaust narratives.
Meet the women who survived life in the concentration camps whilst guards and inmates knew they were pregnant and yet all lived to tell the tale with their babies.
Based on original research, this talk explores the circumstances that enabled their survival, who helped them, and what that can tell us about the nuances surrounding life in concentration camps.
