Fragments of a Diary - Closing Concert
Sunday 28th January, 7.30pm, Jesmond United Reformed Church

Josima Feldschuh was a wunderkind pianist and composer from a Jewish family in Warsaw. She died in 1943 at the age of 15, whilst fleeing the Warsaw Ghetto. Josima talked about how she wanted to become a composer one day, to “prove to the world” that women were not only capable of playing pieces written by others, but also of composing music themselves. She left a manuscript of 17 perfectly handwritten piano pieces, which she composed from as young as 9 years old, up to her death. These are currently kept at the Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem.

This concert will include four of those pieces, interspersed throughout the programme. The final piece will be a special commission dedicated to Josima. This new piece has been written for piano quintet and tenor, with sections from Josima’s father’s diary used for the vocal part, which will be sung in Polish. The piece was commissioned to be written by the Ukranian composer Volodymyr Runchak, who is currently a war refugee in Poland, near Warsaw.
