‘Fragility of Freedom’ Remembering the Holocaust in Bath and North East Somerset
A special ceremony to mark the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau the largest Nazi death camp is taking place in Bath on Thursday 25th January 2024.

The event, to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2024, is being organised by Bath & North East Somerset Council in partnership with Bath Interfaith Group and takes place at the Guildhall.

On this day, people across Bath and North East Somerset are asked to come together to bear witness for those who endured genocide, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on January 27th each year and remembers the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The commemoration is co-ordinated nationally by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, and this year has the theme ‘Fragility of Freedom.’

Freedom is fragile and it cannot be taken for granted. Freedom means different things to different people. What is clear is that in every genocide that has taken place, those who are targeted for persecution have had their freedom restricted and removed.

The council’s event will be held at 5.45pm on Thursday 25th January at the Guildhall, High Street, Bath, BA1 5AW and is open to all.

The Chair of the Council, Councillor Sarah Moore will make an opening address at the event, followed by poems, music, and reflections on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Places are limited and booking is essential. Please note: Tickets will be checked on arrival.
