Holocaust Memorial Day Event
National Museum Cardiff
27 January 2024, 3pm-5.30pm
Cost Free

Join Amgueddfa Cymru in collaboration with Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for an impactful afternoon commemorating the lives tragically taken during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Gain insights into the profound effects of genocide through personal accounts, participate in a creative protest workshop, and join a peaceful candlelit vigil. This event aims to deepen understanding, foster empathy, and encourage reflection on the importance of remembrance.

Let us come together in remembrance and solidarity, as we honour the lives affected by historical tragedies and strive to build a world free from such atrocities.

Event Highlights

Film: Stories of Genocide: Lessons for Today
3pm – 3.30pm
We will be sharing with you Stories of Genocide: Lessons for Today. The film consists of interviews with three survivors of genocide: Ruth Barnett, Eric Murangwa and Kemal Pervanic, survivors of The Holocaust, the Genocide in Rwanda and the Bosnian Genocide respectively. It also shows how places like The Imperial War Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, as well as the student-led Genocide 80Twenty group, are keeping the stories of genocide survivors alive.

Talk: Isameldin Agieb
3.30 pm – 3:50 pm
Hear firsthand from Isameldin Agieb, a survivor of the genocide in Darfur, which began in 2003 and where the violence continues today. Isam will share his accounts of subjugation and his journey to freedom.

Workshop: Protest Pom Poms
3:30 pm – 5pm
Take part in a workshop led by Naz Syed (Ziba Creative). Naz will lead participants in creating Protest Pom Poms. This creative session is designed to empower and unite us in our collective commitment to protest and resistance, fostering a sense of strength and solidarity.

Activity: Vigil by Candle Light
5:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Join us for a peaceful candlelit vigil, an opportunity to reflect and pay respects in solidarity to lives taken past and Present.

This is a drop-in event, our front-of-house team members will be available to guide you upon arrival.
