'Fragility of Freedom: The Stories of two Holocaust Survivors from Slovakia in the AJR Refugee Voices Testimony Archive'

Please join us to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 with Dr Bea Lewkowicz, Director of the AJR Refugee Voices Testimony Archive. The talk is organised by the Centre for the Movement of People (CMOP) at Aberystwyth University and the Jewish History Association of South Wales (JHASW) as part of Holocaust Resources Wales, a project funded by The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR)

In her talk Dr Bea Lewkowicz will discuss the importance of Holocaust testimony and introduce the AJR Refugee Voices Archive. She will then present the stories of two Slovak Jewish Survivors in the Archive: Prof. Gerta Vrbova from Trnava and Bea’s mother, Dr Gertrud Friedmann from Piestany. She will investigate their narratives of survival and will examine how the women contextualised and made sense of their own war-times experiences. Her talk will also touch on the Auschwitz escape of two Slovak prisoners, Rudi Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, in April 1944, whose fate was linked to both women.

1 February 2024, 6pm-7pm, Online (register via Zoom).
