The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 is One Day. When war with Germany was declared on 3 September 1939, in just one day the status of German and Austrian refugees in Britain changed significantly. Having escaped to safety in a new country, these refugees now became 'enemy aliens' and were summoned to tribunals to determine what threat they posed to national security. In 1940, with the threat of invasion, many of those who had been declared genuine refugees from Nazi oppression at the tribunals, were now detained and sent to internment camps. From the records held at Surrey History Centre, we explore how Surrey dealt with its 'enemy aliens' and what this meant for individual Jewish refugees.
