Gypsy (Roma and Sinti) - The History of the Bock Family

At school we did learn about the war but not about the Holocaust – and who would be bothered about what happened to a Gypsy?” – Valeria Bockova

Currently living in Manchester, the Bock Family has spent most of their lives fleeing persecution and prejudice. Both in the UK and abroad, they have been the target of racism because they are Romany. Many of their relatives were murdered under the Nazi regime. It is estimated that at least 200,000 Roma and Sinti people were killed in the Porrajmos (translates as “The Devouring” – the Romany word to describe the murder of the Roma and Sinti under the Nazi regime). This is their story.

HMDT would like to thank The Bock Family, Amanda Sebestyen, Donald Kenrick, Zuzana Slobodova, David Chirico and Nidhi Trehan for making this resource possible. For more information on the Porrajmos , please listen to our podcast
