KS3 Lesson Plan - Citizenship
Aim: To explore the idea of how people with different backgrounds and experiences can contribute to society.
Starter: In rough, make some notes on the following:
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you were in the ‘minority’? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you were in the ‘majority’? What different feelings did (or might) each situation give you?
[Feedback]
Group work
In small groups, look at the profiles provided. These are of individuals who, during the Holocaust and other genocides, experienced discrimination because they were ‘different’ from those around them.
What would you think might be the ‘first signs’ of such discrimination in a society? Why do you think other people did not object but sometimes actively participated in this discrimination?
[Feedback]
Class discussion
[It might be useful to focus on the case study Putting People in Categories during class discussion of this issue.]
*What should be the international response when countries perpetrate such discriminatory laws? What has happened in the past? [The HMD website Rwandan timeline may help with this.]
*How does a society try to prevent such discrimination? How do we deal with issues of discrimination in our society?
*Are there any types of difference that a society should not try to encourage?
Individual work
EITHER: Choose one, or two, of these individual profiles. (Prepare a short summary of how and why they suffered from discrimination.)
What do you find the most amazing or shocking thing about their story? (Explain why.)
OR: Imagine that files have just come to light on one of these case studies. Write a newspaper or magazine report about this ‘news’; it should interest and inform readers about these events and issues.
OR: Present a TV ‘news’ item relating to one of these stories, in which a ‘bystander’ to one of these events has just come forward.
Extension work
*How can a society encourage its members to respect and value difference?
*Find out: What contributions to the national character have been made by different communities who have immigrated to Britain over the centuries? [eg. Anglos & Saxons, Normans, Huguenots, Jews, Afro-Caribbeans, Bangladeshis, Ugandan Asians etc.]
