KS4 and post-16: RE/PSHE/Citizenship/General Studies

Issues for exploration from the Case Studies

People in Categories ; Amalie Schaich: The racial theorists of the early 20th century tried to find biological differences between people indicating ‘superiority’ or ‘inferiority’. Suggest some reasons why people may have wanted to do this.
We do not use indicators such as ‘nasal indexes’ these days, but what other sorts of indicators are used in our society to suggest superiority and inferiority?

Albrecht Becker: Consider why persecution of gays and lesbians was included as part of Nazi policy.

There is considerable debate in religious circles today about gay issues, to the point that it has become a potential source of schism in the Anglican communion. Explore, analyse and comment on some of these views. (Useful sources might include: www.reform.org.uk ; www.inclusivechurch.net ; see also Peter Tatchell’s article in REToday, Autumn 2006, Vol 24 No 1.)

Let One Go Free. Hannah Hickman writes that: ‘It is almost impossible to believe the hysteria that had taken hold of the German people, even to the extent of forbidding children to play in the street.’ How do you think this hysteria was able to take hold? Can we find echoes of how this process works in our own society?

How do the experiences of the people in the case studies compare to issues of difference in our own society?

How might a society balance the need for everyone to have common goals with their right to difference? Is there a limit to how different people can be, beyond which society can no longer function?

‘There is strength in diversity; Nature herself confirms this’. Discuss.
