Education
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust produces materials specific to the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day. The theme for 2009 is Stand up to Hatred. Free educational resources are now available on this site to download.
You will find the electronic version of our education pack and activity board. It contains case studies, lesson plans, and suggestions for collective worship/assemblies
Hard copies of the pack, which includes posters suitable for display can also be requested by contacting HMDT on 0845 838 1883 or enquiries@hmd.org.uk
HMD09 encourages students to change their future by remembering and learning from the past. Schools and colleges are encouraged to participate in HMD and remember the victims of the Holocaust and more recent genocides.
The materials we have produced for HMD09 aim to assist in that process and to encourage everyone to Stand up to Hatred in their own community. We recognise that standing up to hatred is not easy and we are not asking young people to put themselves in danger. However the issues that can be addressed and explored with students in the days leading up to HMD should move beyond the standard curriculum requirement for teaching about the Holocaust as an historical event. They call for us to acknowledge that hatred exists in a variety of forms across the world and in our local community and to remember that genocide takes place when acts of hatred go unchallenged.
The HMDT pack provides teachers with a framework to explore human rights and responsibilities and a web exclusive resource suggests additional creative and cross curricular ways for students to work collaboratively and safely to develop their own Stand up to Hatred campaign and to share their ideas with the wider community.
