Holocaust Memorial Day 2008 (HMD08) was marked across the UK by hundreds of events in Schools, Places of Worship, Youth Groups, Community Centres and many more. Celebrity supporters of Holocaust Memorial Day also spoke out on HMD08.
Stephen Fry, Writer, Director and Actor said: “Working in the film and media industry, personal freedom without fear of discrimination has been very important to me. On Holocaust Memorial Day I will be remembering all those who experienced this same discrimination under Nazi rule, and who continue to suffer today as a result of genocide.”
Claudia Winkleman, Presenter said “If I’d been living in Germany during the war I would never have enjoyed the freedom that I have today, due to my Jewish heritage. Throughout my life, I’ve had opportunities to be part of the entertainment and media industry, working on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and writing for a national newspaper. I think the work of the Holocaust Day Memorial Trust is extremely important in reflecting on, and combating, discrimination in all its forms.”
Presenter and Comedian, Paul O’Grady speaking about the success of the RESPECTacles exhibition organised for HMD08 said “I am delighted at the success of the RESPECTacles project to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. It is a powerful reminder of a time when a lack of respect had evil ramifications. Get yourselves along to visit Liverpool’s impressive Town Hall as soon as possible and bring along a pair of your specs or sunglasses to add to the collection before they are all donated to charity.”
Actor, Kwame Kwai Armah said “I’m extremely proud of my ancestry, and changed my name to a Ghanaian one as a result. As the first black Briton to have a play staged at the West-end, I have shown that the discrimination that my people still face can be challenged and overcome. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust works to combat this discrimination, and for that I greatly support their work.”
