International Roma Day is a celebration of Roma history and traditions. The Day also draws attention to discrimination directed to Roma and Gypsy communities globally and to call for human rights of all to be respected and observed.

More information on International Roma Day can be found on the European Roma Rights Centre website – http://www.errc.org/cikk.php?cikk=2740

European Roma and Sinti (Gypsies) were targeted for death under the Nazi regime and upwards of two hundred thousand Roma and Sinti were killed in concentration camps between 1933 – 1945. HMD reminds us that on International Roma Day we should remember the Gypsy victims and survivors of the Nazi genocide and also look at how Gypsy and Traveller groups are treated across the UK today.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust website contains many resources which are suitable for further exploration on International Roma Day.

You can read the story of Amalie Schaich a Roma child survivor of Auschwitz.

You can read the letter from Nellie Delaney , the sister of Johnny Delaney, a young Irish traveller who was kicked to death in Liverpool in 2003 for being “only a Gypsy”.

HMDT produced a poster in 2008 focussing on the Gypsy experience under the Nazi regime and in the UK today

The poem It’s Going to Rain by Valdemar Kalinin explores the Roma fate during the Holocaust.
