General Romeo Dallaire spoke to the audience at the national commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day in Cardiff on 26th January 2006.

He was introduced by Jamie Owen, and spoke to the assembled audience of Holocaust survivors, ambassadors and VIP’s, including the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, about his experience as the leader of the UN Peacekeeping mission to Rwanda in 1994. He asked the question “Are all humans human or are some more human than others?”

In Rwanda, General Romeo Dallaire, head of the UN peacekeeping force, ended up attempting to stop the genocide with just two hundred men. He was ordered by the UN to leave on three occasions. He refused each time. Eyewitnesses report him driving into town at night and personally rescuing people.

His full speech can be downloaded here.
