We are excited to announce the Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) activities that will hosting one of 70 specially designed candles commissioned to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
From Stornoway to Southend-on-Sea, and from Belfast to Bristol, the candles will symbolically link commemorations taking place across the UK, binding them together with a common thread in what is a significant anniversary year.
Some of the locations that will be lighting the unique candles have been chosen due to their historical significance, such as Lowestoft Railway Station where 200 Kindertransport refugees arrived in December 1938. While others demonstrate the geographic reach of Holocaust Memorial Day as we highlight events in each corner of the UK.
The 70 candles for 70 years project will also help to draw attention to the range and diversity of activities taking place across the country, and connect local events into the UK Commemorative Event where one of the 70 candles will be lit. You can explore the varied locations and the details of the events on our interactive UK map below.
We were overwhelmed with nominations from across the UK, and had to make many difficult decisions about which events should receive a candle. We made decisions based on reaching into communities in every region of the UK and being representative of the wide spectrum of activities organised for HMD.
Lots of fantastic HMD events will have unfortunately not been picked to have a candle, but this is in no way reflective of their quality or importance.
