Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month
June 2008 sees the first annual Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month taking place across the UK.
GRTHM offers us all the chance to raise awareness and explore the history, culture and language of these communities. It will challenge myths, tackle prejudice and offers a balanced debate about the issues. GRTHM celebrates the richness that Gypsy, Roma and Travellers communities bring to our everyday lives through their many and varied academic and artistic achievements.
The Roma and Sinti communities were persecuted under the Nazi regime, and upwards of 200, 000 Roma and Sinti were murdered under this regime. You can use these HMDT resources to find out more about the experience of the Roma and Sinti

Case Study on Amalie Schaich, a survivor who was imprisoned at Auschwitz
If you are holding an event for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Month, you may find it useful to recite a poem – HMDT recommend ‘It’s Going to Rain’ by Valdemar Kalinin which examines the treatment of Roma and Sinti by the Nazis.
In the UK today, Travellers are persecuted because they are “different” – you can read the case study of Johnny Delaney, who was killed in Liverpool in 2003 , here, Johnny’s sister Nellie tells of the impact his death has had.
HMDT urge everyone to take the time to find out about their local Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and to celebrate their rich culture and heritage.
