Kaddish Commemorative Concert
On the morning of 7 November 1938, a young Polish Jew, Herschel Grynszpan, assassinated the third secretary to the German embassy in Paris. In reprisal, on the night of 9 November, the Nazis unleashed a tirade of violence against the Jews right across Germany and Austria. Over 1,000 synagogues were burned, over 25,000 Jews arrested and 91 Jews killed. The growing tide of Nazi antisemitism had been no secret before
this. On Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass - the Nazis openly demonstrated their violence and the fact that they were prepared to kill.
This concert commemorates 70 years since that seminal moment in the lives of European Jewry.
Bernstein's Symphony No.3 (Kaddish)
Widely acclaimed as one of the most intensely moving and devastatingly beautiful compositions of the twentieth century, Kaddish Symphony No. 3 remains one of Leonard Bernstein's greatest accomplishments.
This will be an exclusive opportunity to hear Samuel Pisar, a survivor of the Holocaust, deliver the narrative that he wrote to accompany his close friend Bernstein's rarely performed symphony.
Originally performed in 1989, Pisar's narrative was broadcast globally from the Warsaw Grand Opera on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.
Following his experiences as a child in Auschwitz and Dachau, Pisar's words form a heartfelt and thought-provoking plea to God, that begins with disputation and ends with reconciliation.
As we prepare to commemorate the events of Kristallnacht 70 years ago, Kaddish Symphony No. 3 is a poignant reminder of the tragedy of the Holocaust and the lessons that are still incumbent upon us today.
Proceeds from the concert will support the work of the Holocaust Centre and the Aegis Trust.
