Organising a Local Activity

What is a Local Activity?
A Local Activity is any event which is organised to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day in a local community.
Local Activities are vital to the success of Holocaust Memorial Day as marking the day within local communities helps achieve understanding of fundamental human rights and raises awareness of the intolerances and prejudices that still exist in communities across Britain. Local activities help individuals to apply the lessons of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides to their own lives and increases understanding of and respect for the diversity which exists in our communities.
Why should I organise a Local Activity?
By organising a local activity you are remembering the victims of the Holocaust and showing a commitment to opposing discrimination of all kind in your local community.
Who can organise a Local Activity?
Anyone! Since Holocaust Memorial Day was established local councils; schools; religious groups; community groups; union representatives; student organisations; theatre groups; gay, lesbian, bisexual & transgender groups; disability groups and interested individuals have all organised local events.
There are no rules on who can, or should, organise a local event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
What kind of event can we hold?
There is no such thing as a standard Holocaust Memorial Day event. Since 2001 there has been an increase in the number of events held and the creative thinking behind these events.
It is important to arrange an event which is relevant and open to everyone – you may wish to involve different community groups in your planning. It is central to the aims of Holocaust Memorial Day that events are as inclusive as possible.

How can the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust help?
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust provides a range of free resources which can help with the organisation of your event.
Every year we publish a Local Activities pack containing a wealth of information designed to help with organising and publicising your event. The pack includes the aims and objectives of the Trust, the theme paper, frequently asked questions, advice on publicity and contact details for useful organisations.
We can provide materials for display and distribution, suitable readings and poems and direct organisers towards other groups which can help provide speakers and other suitable resources.
Visit our resources page regularly or call 0845 838 1883 to discuss how we can help.
