On loan from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), this exhibition is a set of six pull-up banners which were created for HMD 2011, Untold Stories. Each survivor reveals an object from their lives before genocide and its significance to them. The exhibition will tour around 4 Libraries and Idea Stores, and resources will also be made available from HMDT to provide info on the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, and feedback to the life stories through the post card project. In addition Libraries and Idea Stores will have book displays.
Tuesday 23rd January – School screening of The Rescuers and Q&A (students Year 9 and above)
Rich Mix, 9.30am - 12.45pm
This free event will include a screening of fascinating film THE RESCUERS - which traces the journey of Stephanie Nyombayire, a young Rwandan anti-genocide activist who teams up with Sir Martin Gilbert, the renowned Holocaust historian, to travel across 15 countries and three continents interviewing survivors and descendants of the diplomats who rescued tens of thousands of Jews from the horrors of the Nazi death camps. The film will be followed by a talk and Q&A with Mike Levy chaired by Rachel Burns. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on the film and to consider this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme: Power of Words. To conclude the event, students from participating schools will be invited to read from the Statement of Commitment.
Sunday 28th January – Jewish Heritage Walk
12:00 Starting at midday from Aldgate tube going along Whitechapel High Street, crossing Altab Ali Park going up to Commercial Road turning left at Myrdle Street and then right into Fieldgate Str crossing Whitechapel road into Greatorex Street We stop at Vallance Road outside Hughes Mansions. Finishing at the East London Central Synagogue in Nelson Street in time for the Interfaith Memorial Day Event.
Postcard Project – various events will have copies of the HMD booklet and postcard for the public to respond to the life story of someone who was persecuted during the Holocaust or Genocide. For more info go to: www.hmd.org.uk/postcards
